The Ward to Downtown Bridge

In December 2023,  due to unforeseen challenges, the City of Guelph cancelled the construction contract for the Ward to Downtown Pedestrian Bridge.

The City carefully considered and assessed options for next steps for this project. The decision was made to cancel the Ward to Downtown Bridge project and instead examine pedestrian crossings in the area as part of the ongoing Macdonell Structures Environmental Assessment (EA).

By adding this connectivity option into the Macdonell Structures EA, the City will be able to explore pedestrian crossings over the river holistically and find the best possible solution for the area as a whole.

Background

An EA was completed in July 2017 which evaluated alternatives for pedestrian bridges crossing the Speed River from St. Patrick’s Ward to downtown. The EA recommended that a bridge immediately south of the GJR tracks be implemented. The proposed bridge was intended to link a future trail from Duke Street over the river to Macdonell Street. Please see the below related documents related to the EA.
